Air-Fuel Mixture
Outside air is sucked in and stored in the intake manifold.
The fuel injector sprays fuel into the intake manifold, creating an air-fuel mixture.

Exhaust Gas
Once the piston returns to the top of its stroke and the air-fuel mixture is compressed, a spark is emitted from the spark plug.
The spark ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture, resulting in combustion, which drives the piston back down.
Following combustion, the spent air-fuel mixture (exhaust gas) remains in the cylinder.
